Towel Fabrics: What Actually Makes a Good Towel

When buying towels, many judge by appearance alone, while real quality lies in details not easily seen with the naked eye.

What determines towel quality?

  • Fabric weight (GSM): The higher the weight, the better the towel's water absorption and softness. Good towels are usually heavier than cheap ones.
  • Cotton fiber length: Long fibers (like Egyptian cotton) give higher softness and longer durability than short fibers.
  • Weave density (loops): Weave loop density directly affects absorption capacity.

Egyptian cotton specifically

Egyptian cotton is considered one of the best towel materials globally thanks to its long fibers, giving higher softness, absorption, and durability than short-fiber cottons.

Signs of a good towel when checking

  • Weight: A relatively heavy towel in hand is usually higher quality.
  • Quick absorption: A high-quality towel absorbs water quickly without "sliding" on the surface.
  • Consistency after repeated washing: A good towel doesn't lose its softness or shrink significantly with use.

Caring for towels to extend their life

Wash in warm, not overly hot, water, and avoid excessive fabric softener since it reduces absorption capacity over time.
